Tax Return Splurge !

Thursday, March 22, 2012

First, did I tell you that my husband and I did our own taxes ourselves for the first time ever ? Not only did we do them, we did it right and are getting some bucks back :)

On that note, I am splurging slightly on something I really want. And I need your help to decide! I've pretty much made up my mind, but that doesn't matter because I am presuaded easily.

Splurge Option #1 A Cruiser Bicycle !
To make a long story short, I got my bike stolen 4 years ago when I left it locked up in a SECURE parking garage while I was at the New Orleans Mardi Gras. Baton Rouge vacates during this tme, and some thieves slashed the cord and took my precious Schwinn Cruiser ! I've been mourning the loss of it since. And trust me, I still get pretty emotional thinking about it.

Splurge Option #2 A THEIT Camera Bag !
You don't even want to see what I use now.. It's embarassing. It barely holds my camera and two lenses and doesn't even zip. I do the half zip thing and pray nothing falls out. In Europe (summer of 2010) I had my precious lens in my purse on top of my luggage bag. Some person knocked into my luggage and down fell my purse which had my camera in it. And bam! My lens was forever broke. So needless to say, this is something I probably need.

Splurge Option #3 A Canon 50mm  F/1.4  Lens
So, I could really use another lens. I am a wee bit limited as to what I can do right now. I have a long distance lens and an 18-135m Lense. Basic stuff. I never use the long distance lense and I want to upgrade as far as quality goes.

Splurge Option #4 Save Up for that 7D camera I've been wanting
I could always put the money aside and save it for what I really want, a new camera. I have a really fancy canon rebel right now, eh. And I feel like I would actually get back to photographing and doing what I love.

Splurge Option #5 A Singer Sewing Machine !
I've been trying to convince my Mom to hand hers over to me, but that's not going to happen. She's a sewing genius anyway and needs to keep it. Plus, she's making me some scalloped shorts right now and I don't want to jeopardize those! So maybe I need a sewing machine of my own!

Now, it's your turn to HELP me please! I'm sure when I ask the hubs what I should pick, he'll say "Whatever you want babe" And I love that, but I know you guys could help me a bit more!
W.W.Y.D <-- What would you do?

*By the way, be sure to check out the new link up starting next Tuesday (3/28) ! Time Travel Tuesday !

  1. hmm.. i'd have to say the bag. Then the lens. You need the bag to protect a new lens anyways so it should come before. OR the bike. But I wouldn't get the bike unless you know you'll ride it around & have someone to ride with. So I think i'd pick the bike first.

  2. Yay for doing your own taxes! I always LOVE the feeling of that return - my mom always suggests I fix it so I get the extra in my paycheck, but there's nothing like a big return!

And you have such great ideas, I don't know what I'd do! Since it's truly a splurge, I think I'd get the bike, especially with summer coming up though :) Good luck on your decision!

  4. so, i am of no help to you because i could only narrow it down to 3 out of 5.
i think you should get either 1) the cruiser 2) the theit bag to hang on the cruiser and then 3) the camera for the theit bag to hang on the cruiser. really, i don't think i'm of much help. but i tried! really!

  5. Don't buy a sewing machine if you aren't going to use it or if you aren't willing to learn. I LOVE mine but I knew I would want to sew: my mom does and her mom does, and so do her sisters. Your mom is tackling shorts?! power to her - I'm too scared to try still. you will def have to share them!
those are some really tough options; I vote for all of them! ha! I would probably do something for the camera though..only because i KNOW I wouldn't ride the bike if The Husband wasn't going to get one to go with me lol

  8. Oh my goodness, those are all so great! Btw, congrats on completing your taxes.. my hubby is an accountant so I leave it all to him! As far as the shopping goes... I think I would go with the camera bag! That one is super cute and it's super important to keep that precious camera safe! Happy spending!!

  10. Hm, that pretty much sounds like MY ideal wishlist! I just bought a 1.8mm starter lens, and just got my T3i...

I HAVE however, been lusting after a nice camera bag that doesn't look like a utility or diaper bag!

I don't trust myself with a sewing machine, as I would go straight through my finger and straight to the hospital!

Which one do you think you would use the most right now? I would say the camera bag, because that's something that protects the one you have now, and will protect that beautiful 7D when you can afford it! Annnnnnd it will protect that pretty new lens when you get that too!

  11. oooh- if it were me I'd go for either the lens or the sewing machine!

  12. such a tough choice... I swooned over the bag and I don't even own a camera worthy of going in that bag. I loved the bike too but I've been wanting a bike. Whatever you chooseI will live vicariously through you. My entire return is going to bills and a possible vacation in Denver this Christmas!!! ENJOY WHAT YOU PICK!!!

  13. After 4 years of marriage, this is our first year NOT getting a return back... We are breaking even, but like you, we usually count the return as a 'savings' to go purchase something big or do something fun! On that note, I'd probably pick something that you think you would use the MOST. For me personally, I'd either pick the sewing machine (if you think you'd use it enough) or the camera. A good camera can be used all the time! xoxo A-

  14. Wait to buy the sewing machine! Wait until black Friday because you can usually get a basic machine pretty cheap at Target or other "big box" stores (I bought a Singer at Target)

  15. OH MY! This is really good stuff.. if we lived in a perfect world id say go at it.. buy it all!! lol
I really –really want that 50mm lens… but since summer is coming and you have such an emotional bond with a cruiser.. I’d say get yourself a cruiser!

  16. I think you should go for the bike. Especially with summer coming, it would be so great to have for the nice weather.

  17. Yay for tax return... we bought a super awesome tempur-pedic mattress and it was the best decision. I would go with the sewing machine. I have a singer and its embrodiers as welll and it was the best investment

  18. I haven't even filed my taxes. I'm such a procrastinator :)

  19. I vote lens! I'm using my tax return to splurge on a Canon 50mm F/1.8; I'd like to get the 1.4, but methinks I'll have to save that for another, more monetarily fruitful year...=]

  20. Tough call! I think I would choose the bike...

  21. I vote the bag!
Like someone else said, you can usually get a great machine on Black Friday-thats when I got mine and it was only $50.

  22. I have that Theit camera bag (mine is the black leather) and I LOVE it. I've had it over a year now, and it is the most practical and well built bag. I also get TONS of compliments on it. Definitely recommend!!!

  23. We did our taxes together (it was his first time ever!) and got some big bucks back for being students-wwooot woot! We immediately put it back on some loans, but I would have loved to splurge a little. That Theit bag is to die for and a new lens is always nice (I'm saving up). Go with your heart :)

  26. WOW what a hard choice! I would probably choose the bike, possibly because I really want one of my one :) Although that camera bag comes in a close second?

Let us know what you decide!

    Have a lovely weekend xo
